Since 1980 a team of Brothers has been living in Vanga on the edge of the River Kwilu, about 350km east of the city. At the beginning of the 20th century the American Baptist Church founded a mission station here, out of which developed many local churches, schools, and a large hospital.
Brother Friedhelm holds responsibility for the Paediatrics Department of the Hospital, where also destitute patients are treated and supported. He also oversees other vital services in the hospital. Some of the Brothers take turns in supporting this work.
Alongside many qualified African employees, the Rice family from the USA also are engaged in this work, which aims to make local people‘s lives tolerable.
An active group of friends in Germany and Switzerland shares the financial responsibility of these tasks.
